Folic acid may not be on your radar right now. Just make sure you start taking 400mcg (tiny pill) every day at least a month before becoming pregnant. Folic acid reduces the risk of birth defects of the brain and spine. You can get your daily dose by taking a vitamin supplement and by eating some folic acid rich foods such as romaine lettuce, broccoli, spinach or whole grains.
